The Girl Who Stayed in School
At 13, Srey Pov was expected to leave school early. Instead, she is working toward her dream of becoming a teacher.

At just 13 years old, many people in Srey Pov's village believed that her future had already been decided.
Like many girls living in remote rural communities in Cambodia, she was expected to leave school early, help her family at home, and eventually marry at a young age.
But Srey Pov had a different dream.
"I want to become a teacher one day," she says with a gentle smile. "I want to help children learn, just like my teachers help me."
For her family, keeping her in school was not easy. Poverty made life difficult. There were times when there was not enough money for school supplies, and sometimes she had to miss classes to help her parents work in the fields and care for her younger siblings.
There were moments when Srey Pov thought she might have to leave school forever.
Then things began to change.
Through the support of Rural Education Experts Cambodia (REEC), her school received educational resources and learning materials that made school a place of opportunity and hope. The classroom became more than a place to study — it became a place where she could discover her talents, build friendships, and dream about her future.
"I love being in school," Srey Pov says. "Every day I learn something new. Education makes me believe that I can become the person I want to be."
Her parents saw the change in their daughter. They saw her confidence grow and her determination become stronger.
"We want our daughter to continue her education," her mother says. "We did not have the opportunity to study when we were young, but we want a different future for Srey Pov."
Today, Srey Pov remains in school and continues to work hard toward her dream.
Her story reflects the reality of many girls living in rural Cambodia.
Without access to education, many girls lose their childhood too early and face the risk of early marriage. But when girls stay in school, everything changes.
Girls who receive an education are more likely to delay marriage, have healthier families, earn a better income, and provide better opportunities for their own children. Education gives girls the confidence to make choices about their future and the power to break the cycle of poverty.
At Rural Education Experts Cambodia (REEC), we believe that every girl deserves the opportunity to stay in school and pursue her dreams.
Because when a girl like Srey Pov stays in school, she does more than change her own life — she changes the future of her family, her community, and the next generation.
Your support can help more girls like Srey Pov remain in school, protect their childhood, and build a brighter future.
