The First Generation to Go to School
In remote indigenous communities of northeastern Cambodia, children are stepping into a classroom for the very first time.

In the remote indigenous communities of northeastern Cambodia, education was once only a dream.
For generations, children from indigenous families grew up without access to a nearby school. Many spent their days helping their parents in the rice fields, collecting water, gathering food from the forest, or caring for younger brothers and sisters.
For many families, no one had ever completed primary school.
"I never went to school," one indigenous mother says. "I cannot read or write. I always wished my children could have the opportunity that I never had."
Today, that dream is becoming a reality.
Through the support of Rural Education Experts Cambodia (REEC), children from indigenous communities are now stepping into a classroom for the very first time.
For many of these children, it is the first time they have held a pencil, opened a storybook, painted a picture, or played educational games with their friends.
Their excitement is impossible to miss.
"I like coming to school because I can learn and play with my friends," says one young student. "I want to become a teacher when I grow up."
Parents are equally excited.

They know that education offers their children opportunities that previous generations never had. They believe that learning to read and write will help their children build a better future while preserving the rich traditions and culture of their communities.
When REEC brings educational resources to these remote schools, classrooms come alive with curiosity and laughter. Children discover the joy of learning through books, art, music, sports, and interactive activities.
Teachers see children become more confident and eager to attend school every day.
Most importantly, hope begins to grow.
Education gives indigenous children the opportunity to dream beyond the boundaries of poverty and isolation. It empowers them to become future teachers, nurses, community leaders, and role models for the next generation.
These children are not only the first in their families to go to school — they are the first generation with the opportunity to transform the future of their communities.
At REEC, we believe that every child, regardless of where they are born or what language they speak, deserves access to quality education.
Because when an indigenous child enters a classroom for the first time, it is more than the beginning of an education.
It is the beginning of hope.
It is the beginning of opportunity.
It is the beginning of a brighter future for an entire community.
