A Child's Journey to School
The long walk to school that many children in rural Cambodia make every day, and the dream that keeps them going.

Every morning before the sun rises, a young child in rural Cambodia begins a journey that many of us can hardly imagine.
With a small backpack on his shoulders and bare feet covered in red dust, he walks several kilometres through forest paths, rice fields, and muddy tracks just to reach his classroom. During the rainy season, the journey becomes even more difficult. The paths are slippery, streams overflow, and sometimes he arrives at school wet and exhausted.
Yet he never gives up.
"I want to study because I want a better future," he says with a shy smile.
For many children living in remote communities, going to school is not easy. Some wake up before dawn to help their parents fetch water or collect food from the forest before beginning the long walk to school. Others cross streams, ride old bicycles, or walk in the heat and rain because they know that education is their only chance to break free from poverty.
Despite these challenges, their determination to learn is extraordinary.
When children finally arrive at a school filled with books, educational resources, caring teachers, and opportunities to play and explore, their faces light up with joy. School becomes more than a building — it becomes a place of hope, friendship, and dreams.
At Rural Education Experts Cambodia (REEC), we believe that no child should have to choose between their education and the challenges of poverty and distance. That is why we work alongside communities to build schools, provide educational resources, and create learning environments where every child can thrive.
Every school built, every book provided, and every classroom equipped means that one more child can continue their journey toward a brighter future.
Because behind every long walk to school is a child with a dream.
And every child deserves the opportunity to reach that dream.
